Next Membership Meeting: June 4, 2010

Hello MCOC and NCOC members,

Our next Coalition meeting is June 4th.  The meeting will be held at Harbor Homes in Nashua, 45 High Street, and will run from 9:30-11:30 a.m.  The topic of the meeting will be a transgender training provided by The Network/La Red out of Boston.  Please see the email from M. Quinn below explaining the goals of the training:

Keith,

Thanks for your call yesterday about a Transgender training.  I’m glad you are bringing The Network/La Red in for a training since access to shelter is such an important issue for transgender communities.

If possible, I’d love to get 2 hours for the training because it’s a new and complex topic for a lot of people and generally people have a lot of questions.

I plan to bring copies of “Transitioning Our Shelters” for participants, but I have also attached a pdf version in case you or anyone else would like to reference it in the meantime.  The document is specific to homeless shelters and was created by the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce Policy Institute in collaboration with The National Coalition for the Homeless.  The document is a great guide to help with basic definitions of transgender identities and gives practical information about policies and procedures for homeless shelters.

The training itself will focus on an introduction to transgender communities followed by some policy recommendations.  The training is fairly interactive and there are some activities.  There will be time for questions and I will encourage participants to feel free to contact me for any technical assistance after the training.

If people have questions about transgender accessibility to shelter in the meantime, please encourage them to contact me directly and I will be more than happy to speak with them.

Thanks,Quinn
